A Clare Government TD says a ‘windfall tax’ on the profits of energy companies needs to be contained in any cost-of-living package presented in the Budget.
It comes as the State-owned Electric Ireland revealed it’s to hike its electricity prices by 26.7 percent and its gas by 37.5 percent from October 1st.
It’s understood while a windfall tax has been discussed at the Cabinet table by Fianna Fail and the Greens, senior Fine Gael ministers have expressed fears such a measure could curb future investment.
However, Clarecastle-based Fine Gael Deputy Joe Carey wants senior figures in his party to reconsider that stance.
