Clare Government TD Says It’s “Almost Impossible” To Access UHL Campus During Busy Periods

A Clare Government TD claims it’s “almost impossible” to access the University Hospital Limerick campus at times due to congestion.

Oireachtas members from Clare and Limerick have met to discuss the recommendations of HIQA’s review of urgent and emergency care services in the region.

The members have lent their support to a plan involving all three options contained in the findings, namely the expansion of capacity at UHL, the extension of the campus and the construction of a new emergency department in the Midwest.

Bodyke Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney says people in West Clare in particular deserve better services.

Speaking at the opening of the first of three planned 96-bed blocks at the Dooradoyle site on Monday, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said “we wouldn’t expect to have a Model 4 hospital within 10 minutes of everyone”.

Tipperary Labour TD Alan Kelly believes it’s “criminal” the overcrowding crisis has been allowed to persist for so long.
