There have been calls for clarity today, after the Tanaiste and Environment Minister appeared to be at odds over the burning issue of whether or not the ban on the sale of turf would go ahead.

Leo Varadkar last night told his parliamentary party meeting that the ban, which is due to come into force in September, will be paused because of the current energy crisis.

The Tanaiste has now rolled back on that slightly saying the plans aren’t paused, because they haven’t even been agreed.

Minister Eamon Ryan insists the measures will come into effect on September 1st, but he denies he’s at odds with the Tanaiste.

Clare’s Green Senator has dismissed any suggestion of a rift between the coalition parties over the matter.

Roisin Garvey insists that they’re not trying to stop people from cutting turf and is reassuring that people can buy “all the turf they want” before September.

She says a common sense approach towards cutting down on polution and the resultant health issues is needed.

The Inagh Senator is confident that this issue won’t be the straw the broke the camel’s back for Government.

Clare’s Fianna Fáil TD has accused the Environment Minister of going on a solo run over the issue.

The proposal is due to come before Government after Easter and Meelick Deputy Cathal Crowe, who says he’s fully supportive of small-scale harvesting of turf in this county, hopesthe measures will be rejected.
