Clare gives resounding yes to Children Referendum

Clare was among the constituencies to record the highest percentage of yes votes in the country, with just over 62 percent of the electorate in favour of the constitutional change.

However despite this, voter turnout was at its lowest in over a decade.

After two and a half hours of sorting and counting votes at Ennis Courthouse today – Returning Officer Pat Wallace declared the result of the Clare Constituency shortly after half twelve this afternoon.

While there was no official tallies present – a look at some of the boxes in Ennis, Kilrush and Shannon indicated a 60 /40 spilt in favour – while the majority of the 350 or so postal votes counted were also in favour of the proposed amendment to the constitution.

However despite Clare’s resounding yes- voter turnout was extremely low.

Just 25, 808 people cast their ballots yesterday and when 94 spoilt votes are taken into account it brought the valid poll to 25, 714- or just 32 per cent of the total electorate of 79, 905.

This is almost 18 percent lower than turnout for the last referendum earlier this year on the Fiscal Treaty which stood at 49.8 per cent and numbers for that vote were at their lowest in over a decade.
