A Clare candidate in the recent General Election is accusing the Government of lacking the political will to make a vital medical treatment free of charge.
Women currently have to pay between €30 and €70 each month for prescribed hormone replacement therapy which is considered the most effective treatment to relieve symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes, mood swings, night sweats and bladder symptoms.
Last November, legislation was passed to faciliate the introduction of free HRT from January onwards but the scheme has yet to come into operation and no update has been provided.
Ennis-based founder of the Mná ag Gáire Women’s Shed and Social Democrats General Election candidate Hilary Tonge says the promise to make the treatment free was a classic case of electioneering.
