Clare Gardaí are warning motorists not to get caught out if severe weather strikes.

Bad weather such as torrential rain, severe winds, fog, freezing fog, ice and snow can strike suddenly catching road users off guard and Gardaí say in extreme weather conditions, motorists should assess whether their journey is necesary.

The Community Policing Unit in Clare says those driving, cycling or walking should do so with care, expect the unexpected and heed advice from emergency services not go to out.

Garda Albert Hardiman says motorists can take a few steps to ensure their car is road worthy:

– Service your vehicle so it’s safe for winter driving.
– Top-up with anti-freeze and screen wash.
– Check for wear and tear on wipier blades and replace them as soon as they start to smear, rather than clear windows.
– Keep tyre pressure at the manufacturuer’s recommended level and check you have at least 3 millimetres of tread depth.
– Make sure all vehicle lights are working and clean.
