A Clare Garda representative claims cocaine has crossed the boundaries into all sectors of society.
It comes as Gardaí, Clare GAA, Bushy Park & the Clare Branch of the Samaritans have joined forces under a new programme aimed at tackling substance misuse in local communities.
A series of information evenings are being held countywide in a bid to highlight the dangers of narcotics and alcohol abuse, as well as the support services available to those in need.
The project, first launched by Clare GAA last year, will be placing a particular focus on the encroachment of cocaine in rural communities.
The latest United Nations Report showed that Ireland has recorded the fourth-highest number of consumers of the illicit Class ‘A’ drug globally.
Meanwhile, the number of people treated for Cocaine use nationwide more than tripled from 853 in 2014 to 2,619 in 2020.
Clare’s Garda Representative on the GAA’s Health & Well-Being Committee says the drug has crossed the boundaries into all sectors of scoiety.
Sergeant Dominic Regan says while the Gardaí are not neccessarily seizing more any more narcotics, they have seen a massive increase in those seeking help.
A free event will be taking place in Miltown Malbay’s community hall on Wednesday evening from 8 o’clock.
Bushypark representatives will be in attendance on the night to provide information on local treatment services , while the Clare branch of the Samiratins will offer support for those struggling with their mental health on the back of substance misuse.
Clare Gardaí will also be providing information on their Drug Related Intimidation Service, which will allow peple to report the illegal distribution of drugs without fear.
