On Wednesday’s edition of Morning Focus, Shannon Sinn Fein Councillor Mike McKee outlined how a gang of teenagers was being blamed for anti-social behaviour in the town, including a number of assaults.

As residents told Clare FM of their concerns and fears, Councillor McKee said locals needed to see action.

In response to Councillor McKee’s comments, a senior Garda source has confirmed to Clare FM that there have been seven reported assaults in Shannon town between October and December.

Four of these are regarded as minor, and Gardaí believe that the same group of four individuals have been responsible for three of them.

The trio have been interviewed, and, as is required by law, Gardaí are awaiting directions from the National Juvenile Liaison Office as to how the case should proceed, and on whether the DPP should be consulted about a possible prosecution.

It’s also understood that efforts are being made to obtain these directions as quickly as is possible.
