Gardaí in Clare collected more than half a million euro from speed vans over an 18-month period.
New figures show 538,560 euro of this was collected in the Ennis Garda District between January 1st, 2023 and June 8th this year, with a further 46,800 euro collected in the Kilrush Garda District.
The figures for this county are significantly lower than neighbouring counties Tipperary, where in excess of 3.2 million euro was collected as a result of fixed charge notices over that period, and Limerick, where the figure amounts to more than 1.4 million euro.
It’s prompted concern that not enough is being done to tackle speeding on Clare’s rural roads, with Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú calling for a get-tough approach towards those caught travelling at excessive speeds.
