Clare County Council has passed a number of motions calling for a shift in government policy with regards to water charges.
The Council has called for Irish Water to be scrapped, whiel Fine Gael Councillors supported motions calling for charges to be suspended until a comprehensive Dáil debate on the State Utility.
Anti-water charges protestors, who had picketed outside last evening's Council meeting, applauded Councillors from the public gallery at the end of their debate on water charges.
Local representatives had passed three motions relating to the controversial state utility, including two which had sought the suspension of water charges while until such time that Irish Water had been overhauled.
Both of these were supported by the Fine Gael Councillors, who had earlier voiced their concerns with regards to Irish Water during a meeting with the party's Clare TDs and Senators.
A fine Gael led motion, calling for Irish Water executives to address the Council chamber, was soundly defeated.
Another, which called for water charges and Irish Water to be abolished was passed, but without the support of Fine Gael Councillors.
Anti-water charges campaigners, who had sat through three hours of a meeting to watch the votes told Clare FM they're confident water charges will now be scrapped.
