A Clare farming representative insists the next Government must remove red tape from schemes which he claims are “killing” farmers at present.
It comes as the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue has confirmed that payments for scheme year two of the Suckler Carbon Effiiency Scheme have commenced.
Under this tranche of the scheme, which provides support to beef farmers in order to improve the sustainability of the national herd, €47.8 million is being issued some 14,943 participating farmers.
Chair of the Clare branch of the Irish Creamery and Milk Suppliers Association Martin McMahon, who’s based in O’Callaghan’s Mills, says young people will be deterred from pursuing a career in farming if the current level of paperwork remains.
