Clare farmers welcome news on early payment of farm subsidy

Clare farmers have welcomed the confirmation from the Minister for Agriculture that he is to seek an advance on their Single Farm Payment.

The IFA estimate that ongoing wet weather has cost farmers over 160 million euro, and warn it will have a lasting and costly impact.

Minister Simon Coveney will ask the EU Commission to advance half of the moneys owed to Irish farmers, but this won’t be paid until October.

In the interim period, farmers across the county are calling for emergency funding to be put in place.  Martin McMahon, chairman of Clare ICMSA, warns farmers will go out of business if action is not taken.
