Clare Farmer Believes ‘Three Quarters’ Of Farmers Could Go Out Of Business If Emissions Targets Are Met

A Clare farmer claims as many as three quarters of those in the industry could go out of business even if a lower emissions target is agreed for agriculture.

Government parties are said to be edging closer to a deal on cuts to emissions from the agriculture sector.

Further talks between the three parties leaders last night broke up without a resolution, but sources have indicated the gap on a figure is closing and an agreement could be reached as soon as today.

The initial targets were agreed in the Government’s Climate Action Plan, which commits to an overall 51 percent emissions reduction by 2030.

Kilmurry McMahon-based Chair of the Independent Farmers of Ireland group, Seamus Shannon, claims whatever percentage is agreed on will lead to employment difficulties in the industry.
