Clare is expected to escape the worst of Storm Darcy, as bitterly cold conditions descend on the country this week.

It’s prompted warnings from Emergency Services here.

Met Éireann says it will be bitterly cold in all areas of the country this week as Siberian air moves in from the East.

Temperatures will remain in low single figures during the day, with sharp or severe frosts and icy patches at night.

Parts of the East are already seeing snowfall, but Met Éireann says it’s unlikely that those showers will make their way to Clare over the next two days.

The worst of the conditions are set to hit overnight on Wednesday and early Thursday but while Forecaster Evelyn Cusack says there will be wintry showers here over that time, she doesn’t believe there will be a significant snow event, with snow turning to rain as the day goes on.

The National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management has been briefing the local authority here today and Clare County Council says it’s ready to activate its Winter Service Plan.

Senior Engineer with Clare County Council, John Leahy, says the local authority will be treating as many roads as possible here to prevent against icy conditions.

Clare Gardaí are urging those who do have to make essential journeys to bear the weather conditions in mind and adapt their driving.

Clare’s Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Triona Brooks has this advice for drivers.
