A Clare environmental group claim they feel “completely betrayed” by the Green Party due to the party’s support for the construction a liquefied natural gas terminal.
Futureproof Clare has held a demonstration outside Dáil Éireann calling on Oireachtas members to establish a clear policy against LNG terminals, following the High Court’s recent decision to overturn an Bórd Pleanála’s refusal of planning permission for such a facility in Kerry.
The Planning and Development Bill, which was passed in October, allows for a floating liquefied natural gas storage facility, meaning the construction of an LNG terminal is now permitted by law.
Scariff-based Futureproof Clare spokesperson Sinead Sheehan says she’s bitterly disappointed by what she sees as the Government’s lack of engagement with citizens concerned about the environmental repercussions of LNG.
