Clare Domestic Violence Refuge Brands Proposed Register A “Reaction”

A Clare domestic violence refuge says a proposed domestic violence register is a reactive rather than proactive measure.

The Government will this week bring forward Jennie’s Law which would establish a public register of people convicted of a serious domestic violence offence.

The law has been named after Jennifer Poole who was murdered in 2021 by her ex-partner who had previously been in prison for two years for attacking a former partner and her mother with a knife.

Clare Haven Director of Services Siobhán O’Connor says stronger mechanisms need to be introduced to separate abusers from their victims before serious offences are allowed to take place.
