A Clare disability activist claims a culture of “charity” towards people with disabilities is resulting in workplace discrimination against the community.
A recent report by the European Disability Forum has found that Ireland, along with Greece, has the joint-lowest rate of employment in Europe for people with disabilities, with just 32.6% in employment compared to the EU average of 51%.
A number of reasons have been highlighted by the EDF for Ireland’s worryingly low disability employment rate including discrimination against people with disabilities due to “misconceptions”.
Ennis-based Clare Leader Forum member Dermot Hayes says archaic attitudes towards people with disabilities must be abandoned to promote inclusivity in the workplace.
