Clare County Council originally approved plans for a refurbishment of the convent building and construction of residential accommodation on the 2.96 acre site on the Lahinch Road on December 20th 2019.

Legal issues arising during the sale of the property to Alan Cummins Limited as well as the deterioration of the existing building however meant that works only began on January 2nd of this year.

With the planning permission lapsing on May 9th, the company applied for a three-year extension on April 11th.

The development will consist of an extension made up of 12 two-bedroom apartments with a doctors room, day room and laundry facilities, as well as a new three-storey building comprising 18 two-bedroom apartments.

The company has stated that the new building is “90% complete” while it predicts the entire project will have concluded by August 2026.

The local authority granted the extension of planning permission on May 28th without any conditions.
