Clare Derelict Sites Owners Hit With Over €170,000 Bill In January

Clare County Council billed a greater amount to derelict sites owners in January than in the whole of last year.

The local authority appears to have hit the ground running in its attempts to bring properties back into use this year, with the amount invoiced under the derelict sites levy last month already 40% above the figure for all of 2024.

The derelict sites levy is applied to properties on the Derelict Sites Register and amounts to 7% of the value of the property on an annual basis.

Across 2024, the tax was billed on nine properties in Clare which amounted to €124,110.

Valuations were requested on 26 properties while notices of valuation were issued to the owners of a further 18.

Last month alone, the levy was billed on 10 properties here with valuations requested from the owners of a further three and notices of valuation issued to five.

The amount owed by Clare derelict sites owners who were billed in January stands at €173,950 which is over 40% above the figure for the period of January to December 2024.
