The draft plan is described by the local authority as ‘a clear and shared vision for [Shannon Town’s] development over the next 15 years’ to make it ‘a more attractive destination in which to live, work and do business’.

The document, seen by Clare FM, claims Shannon currently ‘lacks definition’ and aims to address that by managing future growth.

Among the key targets set by Clare County Council are a new main street for Shannon Town, to be done by downgrading the current R471 and removing the roundabout linking it with the N19, as well as an ‘expanded and reinvigorated’ green Town Square area.

The document also outlines the intention to press ahead with a ‘mixture’ of new residential housing types, including redeveloping the Skycourt Shopping Centre and developing a new housing quarter around the Town Park.

The plan has earmarked a new ‘One Shannon’ civic, community and cultural hub, combining the Town Hall, a performing arts venue and a greenhouse and garden.

A more ‘varied’ retail offering in Shannon is also promised, along with new amenities to support healthier lifestyles.

The plan will be on public display until Friday, August 20th.
