Latoon Creek Bridge, which is located close to Dromoland exit of the M18 motorway, forms part of the busy link road to Clarecastle.

For six months, up until May of last year, the bridge – and as a result, the road – was closed to traffic to allow for comprehensive repairs that cost around €1 million.

Now, further works are to be carried out there, beginning next Monday.

The R458 road will remain open, but single lane closures will be in place at times over a three week period.

Questions have been asked by locals as to why the repairs are needed, given the comprehensive job carried out there last year, but Clare County Council says these new works are part of the original contract, and had always been scheduled to take place.

In a statement the Council says they’re occurring now because the river is tidal, and the work can only take place during certain tidal conditions.
