Work is underway on a pilot programme for Clare to encourage people to set up home in rural parts of the county.

The ‘Opt Rural’ initiative is similar to the privately run Rural Resettlement Ireland scheme, which rehomed over 800 families to the west coast before being wound down two years ago.

It’s currently being developed at a cross-department level in Clare County Council, with the intention of applying for funding under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.

Lahinch Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy, who has called for a flagship rural settlement project, says it will give a new lease of life to remote parts of Clare.
