Frustrations At Fresh Works For Latoon Creek Bridge

There’s criticism of the fresh disruption that’s set to hit Clarecastle, owing to further works at a bridge on the main route into the village.

Three weeks of work are to be carried out on Latoon Creek Bridge from Monday, just over a year after a six-month road closure ended there.

These works won’t see Latoon Creek Bridge closed altogether, but single-lane closures will be in place at times over the next three weeks.

This is to allow for pier repair works on the bridge, which is located close to the Dromoland exit of the M18 motorway and on the busy road into Clarecastle.

The bridge closed in November of 2017 to allow €1 million upgrades get underway and it was May of last year before it opened again.

That closure caused discontent among locals and business owners in Clarecastle, some of whom feel it led to lasting damage on trade.

This latest round of works has led to fresh questions and criticisms from many living in the area – and local businessman Paul Walsh says he is beyond frustrated at this point.

Clare County Council says these works form part of the original project and that they’re taking place now because the river is tidal, and the work can only take place during certain tidal conditions.

The lane closures will also only be at certain times.

Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy is hopeful it won’t effect business too much.
