Figures released by Clare County Council show that as of the end of September, some 174 insurance claims were deemed as active against the council.

When averaged out, the combined value of these claims, some of which were first lodged prior to this year, amounts to some €8,586,922.

The figures also show that a total of 70 settlements have been reached from the 1st of January to the end of September; again, some of those claims lodged in previous years.

These are worth a combined total of €913,619.

A statement on the figures goes on to say that Clare County Council is conscious of the need to continue to reduce the number of insurance claims being submitted; adding that €1.6 million was set aside last year for remediation works on footpaths.

This was focused specifically on areas with a history of mishaps or public liability claims.
