Over €1.5m Spent In Insurance Payouts From Council Claims During Pandemic

More than one and a half million euro has been spent on public liability insurance claims made against Clare County Council in the past two years.

The majority of successful claims relate to ‘trips and slips’ on footpaths.

New figures released by Clare County Council show there was a grand total of 159 successful public liability claims made against the local authority in 2020 and 2021.

88 of those claims were made in 2020 and the remaining 71 were settled in 2021.

Despite fewer claims last year, the council’s insurers paid out more in 2021 than in 2020.

One million was paid out last year, while half a million was spent the year prior.

Only 32 claims were unsuccessful over the past two years.

The average payout to claimants against the council in 2020 was nearly €5,700 and reached over €14,200 in 2021.

Clare County Council’s public liability insurance premium for 2020 was over €1.7m, while it was nearly €1.5m last year.
