Councils Urged To Act On Giant Hogweed

A Feakle-based expert botanist is urging local authorities to take action against a potentially dangerous invasive species of weed that is present in Clare.

The Giant Hogweed can cause burns and even blindness if humans come into contact with it, and it has also become a more frequent sight with Limerick Councils now embarking on a three-year project to control the spread of the weed in the Kilmallock area.

The weed has spread through part of the River Shannon catchment, including alongside the River Blackwater in South-East Clare.
