Clare Councillors have formally called on the government to end the means test for the carers allowance, and instead make the payment available to all carers.

Local representatives backed the call from Barefield Independent Councillor Ann Norton, a carer for her daughter Nicole, at last evening’s monthly meeting of the local authority.

There are an estimated 500,000 family carers in Ireland, but many of those don’t qualify for the carers’ allowance which is subject to a means test, unlike the state pension or children’s allowance.
