Council To Appeal Granting Of License For Irish Cement Waste Burning

Clare County Council is set to appeal the decision that allows Irish Cement burn tyres and other waste at its facility in Mungret, Co. Limerick.

Clare’s local authority had previously joined with a host of concerned locals in raising objections to the change of use for the plant, which is located only a short distance from the county boundary.

Despite this, it received planning permission from Limerick Council and, last week, the go-ahead from the Environmental Protection Agency to burn 90,000 tonnes of waste a year.

Irish Cement says it plans to burn 1 million tyres per year, but that there will be no fumes or smoke because of the extreme temperatures used.

But Clare’s Council is poised to appeal against the awarding of the license, after a request for it to do so from the county’s Mayor Councillor Cathal Crowe.
