Homeowners across Clare will pay the same level of the tax in 2022 as they have done this year.

Councillors are given an annual opportunity to decide whether the rate here should be 15 percent higher, 15 percent lower or the same base rate as set by the Government.

Clare representatives yesterday opted for the higher rate for next year, which will be worth around €1.5 million to the Council’s coffers, which continue to be severely depleted by the pandemic.

The decision went to vote among elected members, with Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn and Sinn Fein representative Donna McGettigan the only Councillors to vote against maintaining the rate.

Ahead of the vote, Clare County Council CEO Pat Dowling stated that he believed the higher rate of tax to be ‘critical’ to the local authority’s 2022 budget, which will be put to Councillors in November.

The rate of property tax will now apply to Clare homeowners until at least the 31st of October 2022.
