Clare County Council Yet To Spend Over €5 In Storm Funding

Clare County Council has yet to spend over 5 million euro of the funding it was allocated in respect of the storms of 2014.

But, the local authority is close to completing two major projects arising out of the bad weather during 2014, however.

Works to bolster the seawall at Kilkee, as well as defences at Doonbeg, Moneypoint and Kilrush are scheduled to be completed in the coming weeks at the combined cost of 4.1 million euro.

At that point, 5.7 million euro of the 19 million euro allocated to Clare in respect of the 2014 storms will remain.

This money has been earmarked for a number of projects, including works on seawalls at Kilcredaun, Doonmore, and along the Shannon Estuary, including at farmland there.

3.8 million is to be spent is to be spent at Lahinch Promenade, with all of these works scheduled to begin by the third quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, the Council has outlined its plans for the 2.8 million euro allocated for road repairs following storms in December last.

907 thousand will be spent in the West Clare Municipal District, with just under 800 thousand going in East Clare, and over half a million each in Ennis and Shannon.

The largest single project of 225 thousand euro will see the construction of new storm drainage systems to defend against the ongoing flood threat to several homes in Ennis.
