Clare County Council The First In Ireland To Reject TTIP

Clare County Council has become the first local authority in the country to reject the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

A motion submitted by Independent Councillor Ann Norton has received cross party support from her council colleagues, with many expressing fears that, if adopted, the agreement could erode the powers of national and local government.

TTIP is a proposed free trade agreement between the EU and the US that, if passed, would create the world's largest free trade zone.

However, concerns have been expressed over the secretive nature of negotiations around the deal and that it could lead to national governments being sued by multinationals over laws which are deemed anti-competitive.

Ennis Anti-TTIP campaigner Feidhlim Harty says a clear message is being sent out.
