Clare County Council has refused planning permission for a 30m telecoms mast in South-East Clare.

Eircom Limited had sought the development in Newmarket-on-Fergus to boost coverage in the area.

Éir submitted an application in November to remove a 12m mast and replace it with a 30m high telecoms tower at the site in Ballynacragga, Newmarket-on-Fergus.

In the application, the company states that the existing infrastructure is inadequate to fulfill the current and future demand in the area.

The cover letter also includes a map provided by ComReg which Éir argues illustrates a ‘clear deficiency’ in 5G coverage in the town.

It goes on to state that a failure to grant permission would have an enduring negative impact on the region.

The application was subject to a number of objections from local residents, citing concerns in relation to the proposed development’s proximity to homes.

Clare County Council denied permission for the infrastructure due to the height of the mast, the impact it would have on neighbouring residents and what it says was inadequate detail as to the lack of an alternative site.
