Clare County Council Record Highest Spend Of Any Local Authority On Central Management Last Year

Clare County Council spent more of its budget on central management than any other local authority last year.

The findings are contained in the National Oversight and Audit Commissions progress indicator report for 2022 which covers a wide array of factors including roads, litter, finance and economic development.

The latest report found that 17.14% of Clare County Council’s revenue account expenditure went towards central management, which was the highest amount on record in the country.

In terms of roads, 27% of this county’s tertiary local network was found to be in a state of either some or severe structural distress.

However Clare County Council took significant remedial action, spending a total of €11.9m on strengthening over 105km of road and resealing 146km.

There were mixed reviews for the local authority when it came to its environmental performance.

A total of 1,452 pollution complaints were lodged with the county council last year, while just 17% of residents were deemed to be living in a litter free zone, with a further 73% living in a slightly polluted region and 9% in a moderately polluted location.

Although, Clare was by far and away the front runner when it came to those availing of the three bin service relative to population density, with the 33,429 households doing so here representing an uptake of 198%.

However in terms of economic development, the number of jobs created by the local enterprise office fell by 36%.

Clare County Council also dished out €12 per capita in public liability claims in 2022.
