Clare County Council approve payment to Mid Western Regional Authority for staff costs

 

Moves to try and fight a 50 thousand euro payment to the Mid Western Regional Authority by Clare County Council has been defeated.

The issue was hotly debated at Aras Contae an Chlair yesterday which heard that the MWRA is seeking monies from all 3 Mid West councils to cover the cost of hiring staff to implement recently enacted planning legislation.

Opponents dismissed the regional body as a ‘quango’ which was becoming top heavy with employees at a time of cutbacks but others believed it represented a net saving to the local authority as one of its staff members will take up one of the new positions.

While payment is statutory – some councillors had sought to delay it through legal means but this was defeated which Ennis Councillor Brian Meaney believes was the correct outcome
