Today's meeting at Áras Chontae an Chláir was heated at times.

Councillors had met in private for around 90 minutes beforehand, but still required a 35 minute adjournment before issues were resolved.

Ultimately, a motion to retain the 15% tax reduction was passed after it had been supported by the majority of Fianna Fáil and Independent members.

A number of them spoke of wanting to ease the burden on homeowners, while at the same time criticising the levels of government funding received by the Council.

Fine Gael members had supported a motion which would have halved the reduction to 7.5%, and wanted to use the extra funds to bolster services.

The 15% cut takes around 1.5 million euro out of Clare County Council's coffers for next year, but is worth less than €1 a week to 92% of homeowners here.
