Clare County Councillors have voted in favour of a controversial South East Clare Road going ahead.
The decision was made at a meeting of Clare County Council this afternoon.
There was an audible sigh of disbelief at Council Chambers this afternoon when the final vote was called out.
A packed gallery of parents, grandparents and children from Parteen, Clonlara, and Ardnacrusha expressed their outrage shouting “Shame on you” and “well meet you on the doorsteps” on hearing the result.
Councillors outlined concerns over the impact of the route saying it will obliterate a community and lacks vision for the future.
But in the end 17 councillors voted in favour of the Limerick Northern Distributor Road, 9 voted against.
Ahead of the vote, Cathaoirleach James Breen Advised members of the gallery that a vote in favour does not mean that the controversial south east Clare road will go ahead but that it will be included in the Clare County Development Plan.
It will now go forward to An Bord Pleanala for final decision.
Speaking after the vote residents were unanimously in favour continuing their fight against the road and say they will not give up.
But for now, the future of the Northern Distributor Road remains to be seen
