Clare County Councillors have rejected a motion urging them to back a vote on a united Ireland.

The border poll had been proposed after the brexit referendum, which saw the majority of voters in the North and Scotland back the remain campaign, while the UK as a whole voted to leave the EU.
In the aftermath of this, South-East Clare Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe was one of those who mooted a border poll, and submitted a motion calling on Councillors to join him.
He was supported only by party colleague PJ Kelly and Sinn Féin's Mike McKee, but afterwards he defended his decision to put the motion forward.
