Clare’s local political representatives have made a last minute appeal for a referendum on controversial abortion legislation.
The Dáil is expected to pass the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill tomorrow night (wed) but Clare County Council passed a motion last evening, calling on the government to put the issue to the people in a vote.
Cooraclare Fianna Fail Councillor Bill Chambers lead the calls, describing the bill as one of the most "important pieces of legislation in the history on the state".
Councillors Chambers wants the public to decide on such an issue, and he expressed staunch opposition to the proposed abortion laws, as he feels it doesn’t provide adequate protection for the life of an unborn baby.
