Its hoped designating Shannon as "The Gathering Airport" for next year’s nationwide tourism drive, will bring both an economic and tourism boost locally.

The government hopes that over 300,000 extra people – many of them expatriots – will visit Ireland in 2013 as part of The Gathering and Clare Councillors say that given many people emmigrated through Shannon, its only fitting the airport plays a key role in events.
Mayor of Clare Pat Hayes says they have hit the ground running on this.
