Clare Councillors back calls to officially recognise sign language

Councillors in Clare are backing calls for Irish Sign Language to be given official recognition by the Government. 

Public representatives in the Banner have become the 18th county council to ask for the method of communication used by 40,000 people in the country to be given official standing.

The language which is used by people who are deaf or have other disabilities and their friends and families is recognised in Northern Ireland as its counterpart in the UK and America. 

The Irish Deaf Society says it welcomes the decision and it is a small but significant step towards achieving recognition for Irish Sign Language.
