Clare had the fifth highest level of complaints to the office of An Coimisinéir Teanga last year.
A report from the former Coimsinéir Seán Ó Cuirreáin has also outlined details of complaints lodged against Clare County Council and the former Clare VEC.
The office of the language commissioner received 701 complaints last year – 4.3% of these, about 30, came from Clare, which trailed only Dublin, Galway, Kerry and Donegal.
The largest number of complaints related to a lack of Irish language signage, and obtaining services through Irish from public bodies.
As part of an investigation, it was also found that the former Clare VEC did not have a proper system in place to ensure compliance with legislation. This came after email correspondance between both bodies, when the VEC wrote it's emails through English, even though it had been reminded of it's obligations to correspnd as Gaeilge.
The language commissioner eventually received an email in Irish from the Clare VEC which, it appears, 'had been translated using an audomated online serivce.'
An Coimisinéir's report also reveals that it rdiscontinued an investigation into Clare County Council, having received assurances after a complaint that road signage did not have an Irish translation, did not have an Irish translation.
