Clare Cllr Calls On Irish Govt To Adopt Outright Ban On Israeli Goods

An East Clare Councillor is calling on the Government and the EU to introduce an outright ban on the import of Israeli goods.

It comes as the local authority is set to review its procurement policy following a proposal by elected representatives on the back of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Clare County Council is being urged to look to international precedents to ensure it’s not doing businesses with countries responsible for human rights violations.

It follows a proposal passed at this month’s meeting of elected representatives calling for the council to adopt a ‘rights based ethical procurement policy’.

The local authority confirmed it would review its policy to exclude economic operators for involvement in international law violations, but that excluding operators from occupied territories could leave the council open to court action.

Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District Sinn Féin Councillor Donna McGettigan insists similar approaches have been adopted in other countries.

The Irish Government has confirmed it will recognise the Palestinian state by the end of the month, as the Taoiseach and Spanish Prime Minister continue to canvas for support from other EU member states.

Global charities and UNWRA continue to warn of an ongoing epidemic in the enclave as humanitarian aid convoys struggle to reach Gaza as the Rafah border crossing remains closed.

An East Clare Councillor meanwhile is urging the Government and the EU to adopt a similar approach to Israeli trades to the stance taken against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Maghera Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Hayes says all efforts must be taken to halt the atrocities in Gaza.
