A South-Clare carer who’s recently been honoured with a prestigious local award has once again urged to government to scrap means testing for Carer’s Allowance.
Sinead O’Brien, whose 14-year-old Cathal suffers from a rare genetic disorder with profound needs, has received the gong of Netwatch Clare Family Carer of the Year for the full-time work she carries out along with her husband.
For couples applying for Carer’s Allowance in Ireland, your means are taken to be half of the total means of yourself and your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant.
The Bunratty-based mother says like many others, she has no choice but to seek the support payment because she and her husband are tending to their son on a full-time basis.
