Businesses in Kilrush and Ennis are being warned they face a significant increase in the local authority rates they pay, after next year’s local elections.
With Town Councils to be abolished, Clare Councillors are to discuss transitional plans for new local government structures today, including the harmonisation of commercial rates across the county.
Currently rates paid by businesses in Ennis are 11% lower than the rest of the county – in Kilrush the figure is 17% below the county rate, but one Ennis representative says it appears that raising those costs is the only option considered in new national legislation.
Fianna Fail’s Brian Meaney says all local councillors and election candidates need to fight this to protect local businesses.
