A Clare business owner insists a “worrying” decline in hospitality employment will persist, without a “simple and meaningful” measure of support from Government.
It comes in the wake of newly published CSO figures, which show a contraction in jobs in the sector between April and June, when compared to the first three months of the year.
The Restaurants Association of Ireland has pointed to the Labour Force Survey figures as proof of the economic case for the return of the reduced 9% VAT rate for the hospitality sector, as promised in the Programme for Government.
Owner of Sweet N Green in Ennis, Frank Landy says businesses are being forced to rely heavily on part-time staff due to rising costs, a trend he believes isn’t sustainable, and he insists without a reduction in the VAT rate, more businesses will close.
