Clare-Based Independent Farmer Says Government Food Strategy ‘Short On Detail’

The Clare-based Chair of Independent Farmers Of Ireland claims the government’s new food strategy is ‘high in aspiration and short on detail’.

The government has approved the Food Vision 2030 plan for the agri-food sector, which aims to increase export values by 50 per cent and decrease methane emissions by 10 per cent in the next decade.

While the plan doesn’t include any proposals to cut herd numbers, it states that methane reduction targets will be updated according to measures to be adopted under the new Climate Action Bill.

Kilmurry McMahon Farmer and IFOI Chair Seamus Shannon says there’s no guidance for the agricultural sector on how to achieve the goals included in the strategy.
