A Clare-based HSE Patient Advocate says the Government needs to put its money where its mouth is and adequately fund cancer care.
The Irish Cancer Society is calling on the new Health Minister to prioritise improvements in cancer care such as the expansion of screen services, the reduction of cancer test waiting times and faster access to new medicines.
It comes as the newly-published European Commission Country Cancer Profiles for this year have identified that while Ireland outperforms many EU countries in managing key risks for cancer, it had the second-highest rate of new diagnoses in 2022.
Lahinch-based Patient Advocate on HSE Midwest’s Programme Improvement Board John Wall says given the amount of wealth in Ireland, paying for cancer treatment shouldn’t put people here out of pocket.
