A Clare auctioneer believes a wartime setting is needed to address the housing crisis.
It comes as new figures show almost seven in ten people under the age of 35 are still living at home, with over half a million people citing high rents, the rising cost of living and spiraling houses prices as the reasons they can’t move out.
House prices doubled between 2013 and 2022 ,according to Government statistics, but despite this, the median salary increased by only around 26%.
Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon in Ennis says up to 20,000 more houses are needed annually in this country to meet demand, as private buyers are being locked out of the market at the moment, particularly in the Midwest.
