A Clare Auctioneer claims the new vacant property tax is likely to drive homeowners into the short term rental market.

The measure will be charged at three times the rate of local property tax and will aim to increase housing supply on both the rental and purchase market.

A property is classed as vacant when it has been occupied for less than 30 days in a year, with 5,389 such premises in this county.

However Douglas Hurley from DNG O’Sullivan Hurley in Ennis believes property owners will simply make their dwellings available as short term lets to avoid the charge.
