Clare Athlete Voices Concern That Racial Discrimination Is Persisting

An Clare athlete is voicing concern that racial discrimination is persisting in this country, regardless of whether or not incidents are reported to the authorities.

It follows the publication of the European Union’s ‘Being Black in the EU’ report, which has found that more than half of people in Ireland of African descent experienced some form of racial discrimination over the last five years.

The report carried out by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights examined the experiences of more than 6,700 people of African descent living in 13 different EU countries.

The research found that 55% of the 524 respondents in this country experienced racial discrimination in the last five years, up 48% in 2016.

This is higher than the average in the participating EU countries of 45%.

A total of 6% said they had experienced a racist attack, with 64% of people of African descent in Ireland saying they’re worried about becoming a victim of a racist attack.

Ennis Fianna Fail party member, Amanda Major doesn’t believe racial discrimination is an issue in Clare, but she says the county as a whole could be more welcoming.

The report also found that 18% of people of African descent in this country reported discrimination to an official body in the year before the survey.
